EDUCATION AND LITERACY

With a belief that access to quality education is the key to empowerment of the marginalized, IRC mobilizes and facilitates communities to initiate primary education programs and seeks to strengthen existing public sector educational facilities. Focusing on both provision and quality of primary education, IRC pursues an integrated three-pronged strategy that has the following components:

    1. Creating cost effective and easily replicable quality education models.

    2. Collaborating with the government to improve public education facilities with          the allocated resources present for their use.

    3. Advocacy and creation of an enabling educational environment.

Community participation and women’s empowerment are the key ingredients of the three components that are interlinked and naturally feed into each other.

SOJHERO SCHOOLS
Since 2001, IRC has been operating 31 Junior and Middle schools in Khairpur Mirs called ‘Sojhro’, which means ‘Light’ in Sindhi. Sojhro schools are all located in rural backyards of Khairpur, catering to the educational needs of girls in villages.

Increasing access to education:

Increasing access to and improving the quality of primary and elementary education for deprived rural communities of Sindh is the main focus of this programme. IRC is running its own schools called Sojhro Schools in villages where government facilities are either not available or are not functional. At the same time, IRC is also engaged in improving quality of government schools. Female children constitute the primary target group but male children are also not ignored.

Collaboration with district government:

IRC is always being keen to work with Government sectors. In this regard, IRC has succeeded in re-opening many non-operating Government schools. By knowing the fact that the re-opening of these schools can't help students if the environment and quality of education will not be improved. So IRC initiates a teacher development project to develop the infrastructure and support mechanism as in-service training apparatus to effectively deal with the quantitative and qualitative dimension of the teachers training for quality education in Government primary school.

Adult Literacy Centres:

Literacy Resource Centers (LRCs) are established for providing continuing (lifelong) education facilities to neo-literate learners. Following are main functions of a 'Literacy Resource Center':

Provide reading facilities to neo-literates.
Literacy material production.
Teaching material for literacy teachers.
Provide Training facilities for new literacy teachers.

Though the literacy resource center is directly connected with literacy learners, but it is also used to promote reading culture among students of government primary schools. Moreover, it would provide opportunity to students studying adult education.

Organizing Special events:

Taleemi mela (Educational Fesival): Indus Resource Centre (IRC) annually organizes Taleemi Mela (educational festival) at District Khairpur in which government; non-government and private schools eagerly participated. Schools display their teaching aids, paintings, charts, science/history/geography projects, clay models, art work done by children, wood work, educational games, photographs, posters etc.
Celebration of Global Action Week: IRC believes that this is the right of marginalized children to celebrate the similar events, which are being celebrated by the children of urban areas. In this regard, IRC provides students with opportunity to fully participate in these sorts of events.

Advocacy on educational issues based on field experience:

Taleem-Namah: A Quarterly Magazine highlighting the issues faced by Pakistan's Education Sector in the 21st Century and also encompassing the state of Education in the international context. It includes reports on Education by independent agencies, articles by experts, interviews, case studies and other relevant information on Education as a tool for social change and development.
